IELTS is the most common English proficiency test for anyone planning to study or work abroad. Yet many candidates waste their prep time on the wrong things - memorizing word lists while ignoring speaking practice, for example. Here's how to prepare the right way.
Start with your target band score
Studying without knowing the band score your university or visa requires is a waste of time. Is your target 6.5 or 7.5? That number should shape exactly how much time you spend on each skill.
Give all four skills equal weight
The most common mistake is over-focusing on reading and listening while neglecting speaking and writing. But the Speaking section puts you face-to-face with a real examiner - regular practice with an actual teacher beats studying sample questions alone. In Writing Task 2, structure and coherence matter as much as grammar, and it's hard to improve without feedback from a real teacher.
