What Happens to Rubbish After Collection?
When you put your waste in a bin, a collection truck picks it up and takes it to a sorting centre. There, workers and machines separate recyclables—like paper, plastic, and metal—from the rest. The recyclable materials are then cleaned, shredded, and turned into raw material for new products. The remaining waste, called residual or landfill waste, is compacted and transported to a landfill site where it is buried under layers of soil. Some modern facilities use incineration, burning the waste to generate electricity, which reduces the amount that ends up in landfills. Throughout the process, the goal is to minimise environmental impact by recycling as much as possible and safely disposing of what cannot be reused.
