Diary Entry: Curating the Unseen
Dear Diary, Today I shadowed the curatorial team at the city museum, and I finally grasped how they decide what to exhibit. First, they convene a brainstorming session where each department pitches ideas, weighing cultural relevance against logistical feasibility. A committee then drafts a provisional narrative, mapping out how objects will converse with one another across time and theme. They consult conservators to ensure the artefacts can survive the proposed lighting and climate conditions, and they run audience surveys to gauge public interest. Budget constraints act as a relentless filter; even the most dazzling concept may be shelved if it threatens to overspend. After several rounds of revisions, the final selection is presented to the board, whose approval is the last hurdle before the exhibition moves from paper to gallery walls. Watching the process unfold reminded me that curating is less about personal taste and more about orchestrating a dialogue between history, space, and visitors. I left feeling both humbled and inspired, eager to see how these invisible decisions will soon materialise for the public. Yours,
