What Happens to Rubbish After It Is Collected?
When your garbage truck arrives, the journey of your waste is only just beginning. First, the rubbish is taken to a local sorting centre, where workers and machines separate recyclables—like paper, glass, and plastic—from the rest. The recyclable materials are then sent to specialised facilities to be processed into new products. The remaining waste, called residual waste, travels to a landfill or an incineration plant. In a landfill, the trash is compacted and covered with soil to minimise odour and pests. At an incineration plant, the waste is burned at high temperatures, generating heat that can be turned into electricity. Throughout the whole process, efforts are made to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, encouraging people to recycle more and to choose reusable items whenever possible.
