What Happens to Rubbish After It Is Collected?
When you put your waste in a bin and a collection truck arrives, the journey of the rubbish has only just begun. First, the truck transports the garbage to a sorting facility, where workers and machines separate recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, and metal from the rest. The recyclable items are then sent to specialised plants to be processed and turned into new products. The remaining waste, called residual waste, moves on to a landfill or an incineration plant. In a landfill, the rubbish is compacted and covered with soil to minimise pollution, while incineration plants burn the waste to generate electricity. Both methods aim to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the environment, although each has its own advantages and challenges.
