What Happens to Rubbish After It Is Collected?
When you put your waste in a bin, a collection truck picks it up and transports it to a waste‑management facility. First, the material is sorted: recyclables such as paper, plastic and metal are separated from the rest. The recyclable stream is then cleaned and processed into raw material that can be used again. The remaining waste, called residual waste, is usually shredded and sent to a landfill or an incinerator. In a landfill, the rubbish is compacted into layers and covered with soil to minimise odor and pests. In an incinerator, the waste is burned at high temperatures, producing heat that can generate electricity. Both methods aim to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the environment, although they have different impacts on the planet.
