Emma: Hello and welcome to the LexUnio podcast. I’m Emma.
Ben: And I’m Ben. Thanks for joining us today.
Emma: Our topic is “Hobbies and Free Time”.
Ben: We’ll talk about the hobbies we love and how we spend our spare time.
Emma: Let’s start with a simple question. Ben, what do you like to do when you have free time?
Ben: I enjoy reading books. I usually read mystery novels. They are exciting and easy to follow.
Emma: That sounds fun. How often do you read?
Ben: I try to read for at least 30 minutes every evening. Sometimes I read longer on weekends.
Emma: I love reading too, but my favorite hobby is cooking. I like to try new recipes.
Ben: Cooking is great! What do you usually make?
Emma: I often make pasta dishes. Yesterday I cooked spaghetti with tomato sauce and fresh basil.
Ben: Yum! Do you cook for yourself or for others?
Emma: Mostly for myself, but I also cook for my family on Sundays. It’s a nice way to spend time together.
Ben: Speaking of families, I play football with my brother on Saturdays. We meet at the park near our house.
Emma: Football is a popular sport. Do you play in a team?
Ben: No, just us two and sometimes a friend joins. We play for about an hour. Then we walk home and have a snack.
Emma: That sounds healthy. I also enjoy walking. I walk in the city park for 20 minutes every morning.
Ben: Walking is a good habit. It helps you clear your mind. Do you listen to music while you walk?
Emma: Yes, I listen to pop songs on my phone. The music makes the walk feel faster.
Ben: I prefer to listen to podcasts, like this one!
Emma: Nice! Besides reading, cooking, walking, and football, do you have any other hobbies?
Ben: I like drawing. I draw simple cartoons with a pencil. It relaxes me after a busy day.
Emma: That’s creative. How long have you been drawing?
Ben: About two years. I practice a little each night before bed.
Emma: I wish I could draw more. I usually paint small watercolor pictures on weekends.
Ben: Watercolor is beautiful. Do you sell your paintings?
Emma: No, I just keep them for myself. They remind me of calm moments.
Ben: It’s nice to have hobbies that make us feel calm.
Emma: Absolutely. Hobbies help us relax and learn new skills.
Ben: And they give us something to talk about, like we are doing now.
Emma: That’s true. In the next section we will ask listeners about their hobbies and share some stories.
Ben: Stay tuned, and keep enjoying your free time!
Emma: So, Ben, what do you usually do when you have a free afternoon?
Ben: I like to go for a walk in the park. It’s quiet and I can think.
Emma: That sounds nice. Do you walk alone or with friends?
Ben: Sometimes I walk alone, but I often meet my neighbour, Marta, and we talk while we walk.
Emma: I love talking while walking. I usually read a book at home.
Ben: Reading is great. What kind of books do you like?
Emma: I enjoy simple novels and short stories. They are easy to finish in a few evenings.
Ben: Do you have a favourite author?
Emma: I like stories by Roald Dahl. His books are funny and a little bit strange.
Ben: I’ve heard of him. Maybe I should try one. I usually watch TV in the evening.
Emma: What shows do you watch?
Ben: I watch a comedy series called “Friends”. It helps me relax and I learn a few English words.
Emma: That’s a good idea. I also watch cooking shows. They give me ideas for new recipes.
Ben: Do you cook often?
Emma: Yes, on weekends I try a new dish. Last week I made a simple pasta with tomato sauce.
Ben: Yum! I prefer simple meals too. I make a sandwich with cheese and ham.
Emma: Sandwiches are quick. Do you ever play games?
Ben: Yes, I play board games with my family on Sundays. We like “Monopoly” and “Scrabble”.
Emma: Scrabble is good for learning new words. I sometimes play it with my sister.
Ben: How about sports? Do you play any?
Emma: I play badminton at the community centre. It’s fun and I meet new people.
Ben: I tried badminton once, but I’m not very good. I prefer swimming.
Emma: Swimming is a great exercise. Do you go to a pool?
Ben: Yes, there’s a public pool near my house. I swim for half an hour each morning.
Emma: That’s a good routine. I try to stretch in the morning, too.
Ben: Stretching helps the body feel loose. Do you listen to music while you stretch?
Emma: Absolutely! I love pop music. It gives me energy.
Ben: What’s your favourite song right now?
Emma: I’m listening to “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran. It’s catchy.
Ben: I like that song too. I usually listen to rock music while I clean the house.
Emma: Cleaning can be boring, but music makes it easier. Do you have any other free‑time hobbies?
Ben: I collect stamps. It’s quiet, but I enjoy looking at different countries.
Emma: That’s interesting! I never tried stamp collecting.
Ben: You could start with postcards. They’re easier to find.
Emma: Good tip. Maybe I’ll try it. What else do you do on weekends?
Ben: I visit the market on Saturday mornings. I buy fresh fruit and vegetables.
Emma: Fresh food is the best. I like to bake a cake on Sundays.
Ben: Baking is fun. What kind of cake do you make?
Emma: Usually a simple chocolate cake. It’s quick and everyone likes it.
Ben: Sounds delicious. I think we have a lot of ideas for our listeners now.
Emma: Yes, they can choose walking, reading, cooking, games, sports, music, or even stamp collecting.
Ben: Anything that makes free time enjoyable is worth trying.
Emma: Exactly. Let’s share some of these ideas with our audience.
Ben: And remind them to try something new this week.
Emma: So, Ben, what do you usually do when you have free time?
Ben: I love reading short stories. I try to read for at least twenty minutes each evening.
Emma: That sounds relaxing. Do you have a favorite genre?
Ben: I like mystery books the most. The puzzles keep my mind active. How about you?
Emma: I enjoy painting. I have a small set of water‑colour paints, and I paint simple landscapes. It helps me unwind after work.
Ben: That’s wonderful! Do you take classes or just paint at home?
Emma: I mostly paint at home, but I joined a weekend art club last month. We meet on Saturdays and share tips.
Ben: That’s a great idea. I’ve thought about joining a club, maybe a cooking class. I love trying new recipes.
Emma: Cooking is fun. What’s the last dish you made?
Ben: I made a simple chicken stir‑fry with vegetables. I used soy sauce, garlic, and a bit of ginger. It turned out tasty.
Emma: Yum! Do you cook for yourself every day?
Ben: Not every day, but I try to cook at least three times a week. It saves money and I can control the ingredients.
Emma: I agree. I also like listening to music while I paint. What kind of music do you prefer?
Ben: I mostly listen to pop and indie songs. They keep me motivated. Sometimes I switch to classical when I need to focus.
Emma: I love pop too. My favorite artist right now is a new singer from the UK. Her songs are very upbeat.
Ben: I’ll check her out. Do you ever play an instrument?
Emma: I play the ukulele a little. I learned a few chords from YouTube videos. It’s easy to carry around.
Ben: That’s cool! I tried the guitar once, but I gave up after a few weeks. Maybe I should try again.
Emma: It’s never too late. You could start with simple songs, like “Happy Birthday.”
Ben: Good idea. I’ll practice a little each day. Small steps are easier to keep.
Emma: Exactly. And remember, it’s okay to try something and not be perfect. The fun is in the learning.
Ben: Speaking of learning, I’ve started a language exchange group online. We meet once a week to chat in English and Spanish.
Emma: That sounds helpful. Do you find it improves your speaking?
Ben: Yes, speaking with native speakers builds confidence. I also help them with English, so it’s a win‑win.
Emma: I might join a similar group for writing practice. It could help me with my blog posts.
Ben: Great plan. Sharing interests with others makes the hobby more social.
Emma: Absolutely. And for our listeners, remember you can mix hobbies—listen to music while you paint, or cook while you watch a language video.
Ben: The possibilities are endless. Try one new activity this week and see how you feel.
Emma: Thanks for sharing your ideas, Ben.
Ben: Thank you, Emma.
Emma: That’s all for today. Bye for now, and don’t forget to tune in next time for more fun talks.
Ben: See you soon, and keep exploring your hobbies!
